ChatGPT was down: how the June 10 OpenAI outage unfolded

The popular AI assistant ChatGPT, and image generator Sora, suffered significant downtime as part of a major OpenAI outage today, June 10.

Downdetector showed reports regarding a ChatGPT outage started shortly before 12am PDT overnight and into June 10. This wasn’t the first time we’ve seen ChatGPT go down, with an outage also occurring back in December 2024.

The downtime in December was around four hours, with another outage in June 2024 lasting around five hours. Today’s outage lasted more than eight hours.

Are we going to be getting a lengthy outage every six months now? It’s sure to spark an internal review at OpenAI as it will want to avoid outages like this in the future.

Have you noticed that ChatGPT has gotten a little personal lately? It's not just you. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, admitted last night that the last couple of updates to GPT-4o have affected the chatbot's personality, and not in a good way.

If you use ChatGPT often enough, you might have noticed a shift in its behavior lately. Part of it might be down to its memory, as in my experience, the chatbot addresses you differently when it doesn't rely on past chats to guide the way you'd (potentially) want it to respond. However, part of it is just that somewhere along the way, OpenAI has made ChatGPT a so-called "yes man" -- a tool that agrees with you instead of challenging you, and sometimes, the outcome can be a touch obnoxious.

OpenAI released a paper last week detailing various internal tests and findings about its o3 and o4-mini models. The main differences between these newer models and the first versions of ChatGPT we saw in 2023 are their advanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities. o3 and o4-mini can generate images, search the web, automate tasks, remember old conversations, and solve complex problems. However, it seems these improvements have also brought unexpected side effects.

There’s a lot of AI hype floating around, and it seems every brand wants to cram it into their products. But there are a few remarkably useful tools, as well, though they are pretty expensive. ChatGPT’s Deep Research is one such feature, and it seems OpenAI is finally feeling a bit generous about it.

The company has created a lightweight version of Deep Research that is powered by its new o4-mini language model. OpenAI says this variant is “more cost-efficient while preserving high quality.” More importantly, it is available to use for free without any subscription caveat.
