We owe the entire looter shooter genre boom to Borderlands. This game was the first one to marry the loot grind of a game like Diablo 4, an RPG progression system, and the tight FPS gameplay of a Halo or Call of Duty. Games that followed its formula like Destiny 2 ended up going into the live-service direction, but the Borderlands games have stuck to their guns in being primarily PvE co-op games with tons to do, but not games meant to be played forever. Borderlands 3 launched during the early life of the PS5 and Xbox Series X generations, meaning it also released on last-gen systems. The list of cross-platform games was still small back then, so was Borderlands 3 able to future-proof itself with crossplay? Let’s find out.
Is Borderlands 3 cross-platform?
Yes, Borderlands 3 features full cross-platform support for all systems, but it wasn’t this way at launch. It wasn’t until 2022 that PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC players could all play together via crossplay. Thankfully, Gearbox was able to add the feature and we can now all play together.
Cross-progression, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated. There’s no way to transfer your character between any platforms except for Steam and Epic games, which isn’t all that useful to most players. Sadly, there’s no method for moving your character off of any console onto another, but you can move your loot between platforms to make recreating that character a little easier. Using the trading system, you can send all your gear to the new account on a different platform and claim it there. You will still need to level up your new character from scratch and redo all the quests, but it’s better than nothing.
