No character actor working today is more consistent than David Dastmalchian. The underappreciated actor appeared in one of his best horror movies just last year, the excellent Late Night with the Devil. An inspired blend of documentary and found-footage, the film revolves around a late-night talk show episode where a supposedly possessed girl went to live television.

Dastmalchian stars as the unhinged host, whose desire to boost ratings ends in harrowing horror. Late Night with the Devil is often remarkably dark, allowing Dastmalchian to deliver one of the best performances of his career. Suitably gonzo and chilling, the film is among the best horror movies of the last five years and a must-watch for every genre fan.

Speaking of underrated actors, Rebecca Hall is also one. A generational talent who also happens to have one of the most consistent filmographies of any modern performer, Hall is low-key a horror icon, and The Night House proves it. The story follows Beth (Hall), a recent widow who begins experiencing bizarre dreams while in the lakeside home her late husband built.

Convinced she’s being haunted, Beth will dig deeper into the secrets hiding in the dark. Like other entries in the so-called “elevated horror” category, The Night House blends cerebral, weighty themes with more traditional chills, resulting in a strong horror offering further elevated by Hall’s committed and intense performance.

The Alien franchise is among the most uneven in modern horror, and entries like Alien: Covenant are some of the most divisive. A quasi-sequel to 2012’s Prometheus, Covenant follows the crew of the titular colony spaceship who land on an uncharted planet only to unearth a chilling secret. Although it falls short of its lofty ambitions, Alien: Covenant is among the most interesting entries in the long-standing franchise.

It sees the return of Michael Fassbender in dual roles, although it’s his profoundly eerie and unhinged android David who completely steals the show. It’s a shame that we probably won’t ever get to see the end of this particular corner of the Alien universe because it had more than its fair share of intriguing ideas.

Alien is back on Hulu, and it’s about time. The original 1979 sci-fi horror stars Sigourney Weaver as the iconic Ellen Ripley, who, along with the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo, becomes prey to an aggressive alien lifeform. The film is a seminal entry into the sci-fi and horror genres, launching a massively successful franchise and inspiring countless copycats.

Forty-five years after its premiere, Alien remains as scary and claustrophobic as it was in 1979. The visual effects have aged like fine wine, and the performances are still remarkable, especially Weaver and a chilling Ian Holm as the android Ash. Alien is a must-watch sci-fi horror, one of the most rewatchable movies that keeps getting better with age.

Jaume Collet-Serra’s Orphan has one of the most bonkers twists in horror history, and it somehow pulls it off. The film stars Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga and the ever-underrated Peter Sarsgaard as a couple grieving the death of their unborn baby who decides to adopt a young girl, Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman). Soon, strange things begin to happen, and the couple realizes there might be something terribly wrong with Esther.

Orphan lives and dies with its now-famous twist. The first two-thirds are standard psychological horror, with Esther becoming increasingly unhinged. However, the third act descends into utter lunacy, making Orphan one-of-a-kind in a genre filled with conventional and by-the-numbers efforts.

Another episode of Hulu’s Into the DarkAll That We Destroy follows a geneticist who fears her son might be a serial killer. Thus, she creates a group of clones to cure him of his violent tendencies, which logically leads to even more misery.

All That We Destroy is very much an episode of Black Mirror mixed with a good, old-fashioned horror premise. It blends sci-fi with horror skillfully, never fully committing to either. However, this approach ultimately works in its favor, helping it stand out as a refreshing addition to the Into the Dark canon.

However, her investigation takes a dark turn when she discovers an unexpected connection to the killer. Powered by Monroe’s affecting performance, Longlegs finds Perkins in full command of his distinct and profoundly eerie vision.

However, the real star is Cage, delivering one of his most gonzo yet unsettling performances as the titular character. Cage has never been afraid of going balls-to-the-wall intense, but Longlegs sees him at his most disturbing, resulting in one of the creepiest and most unforgettable villains in modern horror.

Visually, The Free Fall is a treat, with stunning cinematography and striking scenes that make the dread feel all the more immersive and real.

The narrative is engaging and creepy, and the third-act twist is quite well done. It’s far from perfect, and some of the pacing could be better, but The Free Fall remains an effective and scary horror movie that more people should be aware of.

It follows a group of survivors who must band together to survive the attack of a sentient pumpkin out for revenge. Carved knows exactly what kind of movie it is, and it’s not afraid to show it.

Silly, self-aware, and absurd, Carved is the type of horror movie that is as much about the laughs (intentional and unintentional) as it is about the frights. It’s far from great, but Carved is a guilty pleasure that should be enjoyed by those who love B-movie schlock.

Naming it “Sting,” she keeps it as a pet without realizing this seemingly harmless spider is actually a dangerous creature capable of growing at an alarming rate.

Monster movies are great vehicles to showcase practical effects, and Sting is a great example. The film is safe but entertaining, delivering a classic monster story that doesn’t demand much from its audience and instead focuses on providing a satisfying and suitably scary story. Sting is a solid creature feature for a night of fright.

Like other horror B-movies, Mr. Crocket rises above familiarity thanks to strong performances and above-average practical effects, which are very much the star of the show. Mr. Crocket is ultimately a tad safer than expected, but Elvis Nolasco’s gleefully cruel performance in the leading role makes up for the plot’s flaws.

Seven years after the last Alien entry, the franchise came back to its horror roots with 2024’s Alien: Romulus. It follows a group of downtrodden space colonizers who encounter a violent alien while scavenging a derelict space station.

Starring an ensemble led by Cailee Spaeny, Alien: Romulus is a return to form for the series, as it moves away from the lore-heavy approach of the last two Ridley Scott movies and back to the good old space slashers. Spaney is a capable lead, and the action is suitably horrifying and gory, making the most of its confined environment.

Cuckoo benefits from an intriguing premise and a pair of committed performances from Schafer and Stevens. Schafer proves herself a capable leading lady with an intense and engaging leading turn, while Stevens is at his unhinged best. Although limited by its budget, The Beast Within remains a solid take on the werewolf drama.

Its attempts to seem deeper will be hit-or-miss for many viewers, and its ending leaves a lot to be desired. However, it is still a worthwhile horror offering with strong performances from the cast, particularly the young Caoilinn Springall and a surprisingly dark Harington.

However, she soon discovers disturbing truths about her past, uncovering a series of harrowing secrets.

Consecration is a solid entry into the ever-growing canon of religious horror films that greatly benefits from a confident and committed performance from Malone. Its ideas are somewhat safe, and it certainly doesn’t reinvent the genre. But it doesn’t have to. At first, Tentacles might seem like more of a drama, thanks to its strong focus on the couple’s relationship.

However, the truth soon comes out, and it’s as creepy as it is surprising. Borrowing heavily from Lovecraftian lore, Tentacles is an interesting take on double-sided obsession and the dangers it can uncover within a person’s psyche. The screenplay attempts many things, and while it’s quite uneven, the film remains a truly zany and campy mix of ideas and genres that must be seen to be believed.

The Predator franchise has had numerous ups and downs, but 2022’s Prey might just be its finest hour yet. The plot centers on Naru, a young Comanche woman who must defend her tribe against the Predator, a vicious alien that hunts humans for sport. Taking the series’ main themes and effectively translating them to a more visceral approach, Prey is a remarkable achievement and a compelling action vehicle. Although it’s more of a thriller than an outright horror film, Prey‘s atmospheric tone and effective jump scares will have audiences on the edge for a full 100 minutes.

The ever underrated Dianna Agron stars in the 2023 sci-fi horror thriller Clock. The plot revolves around Ella, a young, successful woman who doesn’t want children. Pressured by her friends and family, Ella enrolls in a clinical trial to “fix” her seemingly broken biological clock. Clock‘s admittedly over-the-top plot might lack the subtlety of other, more cerebral marriages of sci-fi and horror. Still, Agron’s confident performance and the film’s themes of societal pressures and expectations make it a worthwhile and even thought-provoking horror picture.

The plot centers on a couple whose resort vacation turns into a nightmare of hedonism, violence, and horror after they’re seduced by an alluring young woman. Full of Cronenberg’s trademark surreal and brutal themes and imagery and powered by Skarsgård and Goth’s committed performances, Infinity Pool is a truly shocking experience that’s not for the weak of stomach or mind.

The 2019 horror movie Pilgrim shows how easily a Thanksgiving celebration can descend into chaos. The film follows a woman who invites pilgrim reenactors to her family’s Thanksgiving dinner to remind them of their privilege and bring them closer together. However, the gathering turns deathly when the actors refuse to break character. Pilgrim is the kind of farcical, almost ridiculous horror movie that both thrills and entertains. Over-the-top and with a healthy dose of campy humor, Pilgrim is the perfect movie for a holiday-themed horror marathon.

A nearly silent nightmare with only five audible pieces of dialogue, No One Will Save You is an atmospheric and electrifying home invasion thriller. Dever commands the screen, deftly guiding the plot using only the strength of her incredibly expressive face.

Canadian irrational horror film Skinamarink went viral on social media earlier this year. The film follows two children who wake up at night to realize their father is gone and their home’s windows and doors have vanished. Skinamarink is among the most recent examples of the audience-versus-critics divide. The latter praised its daring nature and themes, while many viewers found it frustrating and boring. However, Skinamarink remains provocative, intriguing, and above all scary, thanks to an atmospheric approach that will leave audiences shaking.

Body horror maestro reunites with Viggo Mortensen for his 2020 horror sci-fi Crimes of the Future, co-starring Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart. Set in a dystopian future where human evolution has made most humans immune to pain and disease, the film follows a performance artist who performs surgery on himself before live audiences. Although far from Cronenberg’s best picture, Crimes of the Future remains a must-watch for fans of the director’s singular mix of body horror and thought-provoking ideas.

A reboot of the venerable Hellraiser franchise, Hellraiser follows a young woman recovering from addiction. When she receives a mysterious box capable of summoning humanoid beings with sadistic impulses, she must confront the dangerous demonic forces responsible for her brother’s disappearance.

Hulu’s Into the Dark series has served as a powerful forum for established and up-and-coming genre directors to showcase new and exciting horror films, and while we’ve already covered Treehouse (directed by James Roday), we’d also like to shine some morbid light on director Nacho Vigalondo’s contribution to the anthology. It’s a film called Pooka! that stars Nyasha Hatendi as a man named Wilson who takes an acting job as a costumed creature named Pooka, a beast based on a popular new holiday toy that’s selling like crazy. But as the toy’s popularity reaches new heights, Wilson begins experiencing wild hallucinations with murderous conclusions. A fitting genre feast for the Christmas season, Vigalondo clearly had a ton of fun with his off-the-wall concept, and so will you.

There’s nothing quite like a solid coming-of-age story, especially when the focus is on a 12-year-old gymnast (Siiri Solalinna) named Tinja who comes into the possession of a dying bird’s one and only egg deep in the woods — one that hatches and reveals one of the most visually disturbing combinations of makeup and VFX the world has ever seen. It turns out the creature takes on the likeness of those who raise it, too, leading us down a path of surreal terrors as Tinja does everything in her power to shield her family from the monster’s clutches. There’s plenty to be said about Hatching’s vivisection of girlhood and what it takes to be worthy in the eyes of our mothers. With its David Lynch-inspired visions of idyllic suburbia getting ripped and clawed apart, this is a feature that’s hard to forget.

Films like You Are Not My Mother are cleverly-lensed explorations of a world where our parents are not who we think they are. In this 2021 Irish horror film, the story follows Char (Hazel Doupe), her grandmother (Ingrid Craigie), and Char’s mother, Angela (Carolyn Bracken), in the aftermath of Angela’s sudden disappearance. Re-emerging, Angela is not the same parent Char has known her whole life. Exhibiting frightening new behaviors and disturbing thoughts and emotions, it’s up to Char to figure out just what happened to her mother before she’s all but lost to whatever evils have been visited upon her. An astonishing feature debut from Kate Dolan, You Are Not My Mother creates a perplexing, almost folkloric setting and atmosphere where almost any flavor of fear is possible.

Remember that elementary school field trip where you and your peers were besieged upon by hordes of the living dead? Count yourself lucky if such madness escaped you in your youth, because in writer-director Abe Forsythe’s 2019 film Little Monsters, the onscreen kindergarten class isn’t so fortunate. With a cast led by Lupita Nyong’o as kindergarten teacher Miss Caroline, Alexander England as washed-up musician Dave, and Josh Gad as television personality Teddy McGiggles, the horror/rom-com hybrid follows the unlikely trio of adults and Miss Caroline’s students as they fight and defend themselves against zombies that have escaped from a nearby government facility. Filled with heart and soul, laugh-out-loud moments, and a healthy supply of B-movie gore, Little Monsters is an awesome summer flick that assures the viewing world that zombies still have an important place in horror cinema.

Nicolas Cage has become the unsung king of B-list horror films over the last few years, with lead performances in off-the-wall films like Mandy and Color Out of Space. In Willy’s Wonderland, the mighty Cage stars as an unnamed protagonist who agrees to take a janitorial job at Willy’s Wonderland for one night to pay for car repairs. But what Nomadic Nick doesn’t see coming is an army of animatronic foes that wage war against him. Armed with whatever he can find, the man must fight for his life to see the sunrise. A bizarre homage to the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise, Willy’s Wonderland is a whole bunch of Cage-fueled, off-kilter fun.

3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (April 4 – 6)
Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer in Tombstone.

If you visited the Hulu home page this week, you may have noticed that the streamer was promoting Tombstone, one of the best movies that Val Kilmer ever starred in. Kilmer passed away earlier this week, and Tombstone's return to Hulu on April 1 was purely happenstance. But in honor of the the late actor, it seems fitting to name Tombstone as one of the three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend.

Our remaining two picks for the weekend include a harrowing psychological thriller and a comedy/drama from one of the quirkiest directors in Hollywood.
